The Raleigh/Wake Alumni Chapter is proudly hosting a hybrid commemorative fundraiser to honor and highlight the legacy of Dr. Harold Leon Jeffreys, III on April 30, 2022, from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Our target goal is $25,000.00, which will provide scholarships to worthy students within the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Music Department.
Dr. Harold Leon Jeffreys, III, affectionately known as Jeff, Harold, Leon, or Dr. J, graduated from NCCU, a leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) institution located in Durham, NC. There he earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Music. He continued his education by earning a Doctorate from UNC at Greensboro and by serving as an adjunct faculty professor at Shaw University. During his tenure, he developed one of the Premier HBCU band programs on the East Coast, Symphonic and Jazz bands, as well as chamber consortiums. Ensembles under his leadership developed and maintained a reputation for high level musicianship, integrity, and professionalism on and off the stage. He performed and served as musical director at venues along the east coast and the mid-west, to include the Modern Music Ensemble, the Triangle Horns, and the North Carolina Jazz Ensemble. Additional performance collaborations included Eve Cornelius, Gladys Knight, Melva Houston and Nnenna Freelon.
Active in the community, Dr. Jeffreys held a variety of board and civic appointments such as the North Carolina Arts Council, Raleigh Civic Symphony Association, Raleigh Artsplosure Inc., United Arts Council, Bicentennial Commission, and the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, where he became the second only African American to serve as Chair. His professional experiences included adjudicator, clinical and consultant for the North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association, and the Baltimore and Richmond area schools. His professional membership included Music Educators National Conference, CIAA Band Director Conference, and the HBCU National Band Directors Consortium. Dr. Jeffreys was also a member of the Intercollegiate Music Association where he served over thirty years as instrumental coordinator. Dr. Jeffreys was a faithful and dedicated member of Garner Presbyterian Church and a valued member in good standing of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
It is our hope that you will become a major contributor to the North Carolina Central University’s Music Department, thereby creating an opportunity for your organization to promote its visibility in front of alumni and friends of NCCU. By investing as a corporate Sponsor, you will benefit promising music students to advance their career goals while honoring a stellar and dedicated alumnus. The NCCU community at large certainly recognizes and values the immense impact of the generosity and charitable contributions of organizations like yours. Thanks in advance for your kind consideration.
